End of the Year Appeal
Your 2020 holiday donations delivered the meals and resources our Corazón families needed during the holidays last year. However, we continue to estimate fewer sponsored builds, and with your generosity, we can bridge that gap! Our goal is to raise $150,000. You can help us reach our goal by making a holiday donation to our year-end appeal. Your donations will be used to secure tablets, food and to fund Corazón programs in Mexico. Meet Kevin! Kevin is a Corazón scholarship student and a 4th year architecture major. He is currently leading an art class for the younger children in our communities and plans to start a workshop for baile folclorica (traditional folk dance). The Legend Behind Noche Buenas (Poinsettias)
Image by sandid from Pixabay Noche buenas translates to good night in English, in reference to Christmas Eve. Noche buenas were grown during the Pre-Hispanic periods so that they could be enjoyed throughout the winter. Called Cuetlaxochitl, noche buenas were believed to be a symbol of fallen soldiers receiving new life. The fallen soldiers were said to return as hummingbirds drinking the nectar from the noche buenas (Bucur, 2009). Pilgrimage to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and her significance to underrepresented communities in Mexico
Millions of people participate in an annual pilgrimage to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe to pay their respects to Mexico’s patron saint. Author Socorro Canstañeda-Liles explains why the Virgin Mary is important to marginalized communities, “[The Virgin Mary] appeared at a time when the Native people of Mexico were conquered physically and spiritually [...] That’s why she’s so important, particularly to sectors of Mexico who are marginalized…She’s a symbol of dignity and affirmation of a people whose lives and religion are questioned” (Canstañeda-Liles in National Geographic, 2019).
